Artist Statement:
The work was created on the theme of nuclear war. It depicts a mermaid sitting on a rock, modeled in clay and cast in plaster, then patinated to convey a sense of timeless texture. In a striking twist, the mermaid has no head; instead, it is an air raid siren.
The piece connects mythological tradition with contemporary context: just as sirens in legends lured sailors to their deaths with their singing, the air raid siren initiates the possibility of death, chaos, and destruction. In its original installation, the sculpture was exhibited in a nuclear shelter and produced the sound of an air raid siren, blending the mythical and the threatening.
The work places the viewer in a tension between beauty and danger, myth and reality, inviting reflection on the fragility of life and the ever-present threat created by human hands.
