Artist statement:
The sculpture Braking is part of the "Safari" series, in which I explore moments of tension and instinctive animal gestures. The work was modeled directly in wax based on a preliminary sketch from a drawing block, giving it the quality of a drawing in space – frozen, yet still in motion.
It depicts an ox that has charged forward and is coming to a stop, while its momentum continues to slip through the ground. In this moment, the movement is captured – caught between speed and halt, between reality and a dreamlike, surreal state.
The sculpture is intentionally stylized, emphasizing expressive volumes and motion, and stands on a massive stone block, further reinforcing the sense of monumentality and weight of the moment. The black-gold-green patina allows the figure to fully merge with the pedestal, so that the sculpture and its base become a single unified whole.
