Artist statement:
The sculpture Dentex Dentex was created over a long period of time, from 2022 to 2025. It was originally conceived as a commissioned work; however, during the process, the client passed away. The work was then halted and set aside, left in a state of incompletion that, over time, became an integral part of its meaning. Only later, with distance and a renewed perspective, was the sculpture recontextualized and brought to its final form.
The wooden dentex is carved from a single tree trunk, hewn and sanded into a clear, powerful volume. Its surface remains in the natural tone of walnut wood, with visible variations and subtle charring on one side, further emphasizing its organic character and sense of movement. Iron elements intervene discreetly within the form – not as decoration, but as structural and linear accents.
The figure of the fish rests upon a diagonally positioned, architecturally shaped iron structure finished in blue powder coating. This stepped construction evokes a stylized sea – geometric, cool, and controlled – standing in sharp contrast to the warmth and irregularity of the wood. The dentex is suspended above it in a moment that cannot be precisely defined: as if emerging from the sea, or diving back into its depths.
The entire structure is anchored to four dark concrete slabs, providing stability, weight, and a sense of permanence. Designed as a freestanding object, the sculpture is adapted for a gallery space, where the relationship between volume, material, and line can be experienced from multiple perspectives.
